Symphysiotomy was a surgical procedure carried out in maternity hospitals throughout Ireland until the 1980s. Hundreds of Irish women unknowingly and without consent underwent symphysiotomies during childbirth. Many were left with severe lifelong after effects, including chronic pain, walking difficulties, prolapsed organs, incontinence and depression.
